You're standing at Ankara Castle, known in Turkish as Ankara Kalesi. Take a look at those sturdy walls and towers around you. What you see is the result of centuries of building, destroying and building again. There was already a fortress here in the eighth century BC, built by the Phrygians. In 278 BC the Galatians rebuilt it. Then came the Romans, the Byzantines, the Seljuks and the Ottomans, and each of them repaired or renewed something here.
