You're standing on Çankırı Caddesi, in Ulus, the old heart of Ankara. Take a look at the raised ground on the west side of the street. That plateau, traditionally called Çankırı Kapı, sits about two and a half metres above the road. It's actually a höyük, a mound built up by people living here over thousands of years. Phrygian settlement remains lie at the bottom, with Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk material on top.
