You're standing at the Lion Gate, the main entrance to the citadel of Mycenae. It was built around 1250 BC, deep in the Bronze Age, and tradition credits King Atreus with its construction. First, look at the path you just walked up. It keeps getting narrower, ending in a small courtyard right in front of the gate. That was clever planning: there was never room for many attackers at once. On your right is a massive bastion made of enormous blocks. Attackers usually carried their shields on the left arm, so defenders up on that bastion could strike at their unprotected right side.
