You're standing at the Arch of Augustus, the oldest surviving Roman triumphal arch in Italy. The Roman Senate had it built in 27 BC to honour Augustus, who became Rome's first emperor that very year. This is where the Via Flaminia ended, the old road that ran all the way to Rome. Funny thing is, scholars say it was never really a triumphal arch. It was a city gate, just a very grand one.
