You're standing on Krakowskie Przedmieście in Warsaw, in front of one of the city's best-known landmarks: the statue of Nicolaus Copernicus, or Mikołaj Kopernik, as the Poles call him. Have a look at what he's holding. A compass in one hand, and in the other an armillary sphere, a globe made of rings that models the heavens. Behind him is the Staszic Palace, home of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
