You're standing at Conímbriga, one of the largest Roman settlements ever excavated in Portugal. It isn't the biggest Roman city in the country, but it's the best preserved. Start with the city wall. It runs for about one and a half kilometres and stands five to six and a half metres tall. Notice how rough and uneven the blocks are? Many were taken from other buildings. The wall went up in a hurry, probably at the end of the third century.
