You're standing in the old heart of the University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal. King Denis founded it on 1 March 1290, and it has kept going ever since. That makes it one of the oldest universities in continuous operation anywhere in the world. In 2013 UNESCO made it a World Heritage Site.
