You're standing at Chester Castle, in the southwest corner of the old walled city, on a rise above the River Dee. Right in front of you is the Propylaeum, the grand entrance gate. Look at those heavy Doric columns, set wide apart under a massive beam, with a little temple-like lodge on each side. It feels more like ancient Athens than a medieval castle.
