You're standing at Beeston Castle, the castle on the rock. Just look up. The ruins sit on top of a steep red sandstone crag, about 107 metres above the Cheshire Plain. Medieval documents simply called it the Castle on the Rock. The lodge with two round towers either side of an archway is much younger, by the way. Lord Tollemache had it built in the nineteenth century.
