You're standing at Acrocorinth, the great rock above ancient Corinth. It rises 575 metres and you can see it from miles around. In ancient and medieval times this was the city's stronghold. Whoever held this rock controlled the Isthmus of Corinth, and with it the only land route into the Peloponnese. No wonder everybody wanted it.
