You're standing at the Tyska kyrkan, the German Church, right in the heart of Gamla stan. Start by looking up. That brick steeple with its copper spire rises ninety-six metres, the tallest in the old town. It went up after a fire in 1878, designed by the Berlin architect Julius Raschdorff. Spot the gargoyles? They're grotesque animals, something you rarely see in Sweden. Yet these days they feel like a natural part of the old town.
