Gamla stan in Stockholm

You're standing in Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm. Look around you: medieval alleyways, cobbled streets and houses in warm shades of ochre and orange. Much of the style comes from northern Germany. This is where Stockholm began, in the thirteenth century, on the island of Stadsholmen. For a long time people simply called it the city itself. Later it became the town between the bridges, and that stayed its official name until 1980.
