You're standing at the Ben Youssef Madrasa, right in the heart of Marrakesh's old medina. At its peak, this was the largest Islamic college in the whole Maghreb. Start with the entrance. Above you hangs a vault carved with muqarnas, a pattern that looks like a honeycomb or dripping stalactites. The doors are plated in bronze, forming an interlacing geometric design. Above them runs a cedar wood lintel with an Arabic inscription. It praises Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib, the man who had this place built.
