You're standing on Piazza Duomo, the main square of Ortygia Island in Syracuse. In front of you is the cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Start with the Baroque façade. Architect Andrea Palma designed it in the eighteenth century, after a devastating earthquake in 1693. See the two tiers of Corinthian columns? Their capitals are carved with acanthus leaves. The full-length statues are by the sculptor Ignazio Marabitti.
