Castello Maniace in Siracusa

You're standing at the Castello Maniace, on the very southern tip of Ortygia. That's the island where Syracuse's medieval heart sits. Have a look around. Water on every side, and right here is the mouth of the harbour. Whoever held this castle held the harbour. No wonder there's been a fort on this spot for almost a thousand years.
