You're standing at the Giant's Causeway, on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about five kilometres from Bushmills. Look down at the shore. Around forty thousand basalt columns are packed tightly together there, like a giant honeycomb. Most have six sides, but some have four, five, seven or even eight. Their tops form stepping stones that lead from the foot of the cliff out into the sea, until they disappear under the water.
