You're standing on the Burg in Bruges, in front of the Basilica of the Holy Blood. It's an unusual church, because it's really two chapels stacked on top of each other. Start with the ornate façade of the staircase. Locals call it De Steegheere, and it dates from the sixteenth century, late Gothic with a touch of the Renaissance. See the gilded statues? Among them are Mary of Burgundy and Count Thierry of Alsace. After the French Revolution the staircase was badly damaged. In the nineteenth century it was rebuilt, four metres further back. Much of the sculpture was renewed then, because the old stone had weathered so badly.
