You're standing at the Trophy of the Alps, high above Monaco in La Turbie. This is a Roman victory monument, more than two thousand years old. It was completed in 7 or 6 BC in honour of Emperor Augustus. In the years before, his armies had brought the mountain peoples of the Alps under Roman rule, forty-six of them in all.
