You're standing at National Museum Cardiff, or Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd in Welsh. It sits in Cathays Park, the city's grand civic quarter. Start with the dome. Around its base you'll spot lions and dragons, and the dragon, of course, is the emblem of Wales. Then look at the sculpture groups on the façade. They stand for things like Learning, Mining, Shipping, Art and Music, and for different periods, from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The sculptor William Goscombe John devised the whole scheme, and a team of other artists carved the figures.
