You're standing at Castell Coch, Welsh for 'red castle'. It sits in the woods above the village of Tongwynlais, a little over ten kilometres north-west of Cardiff. Take a look at those three round towers with their pointed conical roofs and gilded weather vanes. It looks like a fairy-tale castle from France or Switzerland. That's no accident. The architect, William Burges, drew on castles like Chillon and Carcassonne. Those cone roofs aren't really British at all, but he simply thought they looked more picturesque.
