You're standing at the Alyscamps, an ancient city of the dead just outside the old town of Arles. Look down the avenue in front of you. Under the trees, stone coffins sit in a long row. They're not here by chance. The Romans never buried their dead inside the city, only along the roads leading out of it. This was the final stretch of the Aurelian Way, the road linking Arles with Italy and Spain.
