The story

Story · Arles Amphitheatre

You're standing at the amphitheatre of Arles, almost two thousand years old and still in use. Walk around it for a moment and count the arches. There are a hundred and twenty, split over two levels of sixty each. The oval is 136 metres long and 109 metres wide. Now look up. Those square towers poking out of the top aren't Roman at all. They were added in the Middle Ages. Notice that the southern one looks a bit rougher? That's because it was never restored.
