You're standing at Mediana, on the eastern edge of the Serbian city of Niš. Some seventeen hundred years ago, this was an imperial country retreat. It's the best-preserved part of Naissus, as Niš was called in Roman times. Have a look around. The ground is flat, with the hills that frame the Nišava Valley behind it. There was a hot spring nearby too. Not a bad spot for a palace.
