You're standing at the Tower of London, on the north bank of the Thames. First, look at the square, pale building in the middle of the complex, with a turret on each corner. That's the White Tower, the heart of it all. William the Conqueror had it built in 1078, in stone rather than wood, to show the newly conquered Londoners exactly who was in charge.
