You're standing at Ekenstein, a borg on the Damsterdiep canal, close to Appingedam. In this part of the Netherlands, a borg is the country house of a wealthy family. Take a look at the front. With its slightly Gothic Revival look, it seems more romantic than it was at first. That look dates from 1870, when Willem Carel Alberda had the house rebuilt, reusing parts of other borgs that had been demolished. Notice the modern extension too? It was deliberately built in a completely different style, and it clashes with the old house on purpose.
