You're standing by the Niers, in Gennep. Take a look at the water. It seems like a modest little river, but it has come a long way. The Niers rises near Erkelenz in Germany, at a farm in the village of Kuckum. From there it flows for more than a hundred kilometres, past towns like Mönchengladbach, Viersen, Geldern and Goch. Only the last stretch, just a few kilometres, lies in the Netherlands. Here in the municipality of Gennep, the Niers flows into the Meuse.
