You're standing at the Great Church, or Lebuinus Church, on the Grote Kerkhof square in Deventer. In the Middle Ages this was the town's main church and one of the most important in the whole diocese of Utrecht. Look up at the tower first. It's over sixty-two metres tall. The top section, the dome they call the lantern, was designed in 1613 by the famous architect Hendrick de Keyser. A Latin motto runs around its four sides. Roughly: trust in God, stay alert, think things through, and be strong.
