You're standing at the Roman Baths in Bath. Don't expect Roman ruins at street level, though. What you see up here is much younger. Look at the front facing Abbey Church Yard. Four half-sunken Corinthian columns hold up a triangular pediment. That's the Grand Pump Room. Thomas Baldwin started it in 1789, and John Palmer finished the job in 1799. This is where visitors came to drink the warm spring water, and the room is still used for exactly that. The visitor entrance is right next to it, in an 1897 concert hall with a glass dome.
