You're standing at Warwick Castle, high on a sandstone bluff at a bend in the River Avon. The river has worn the rock into a cliff, and together they made a natural defence. William the Conqueror built a wooden fort here in 1068, and four houses were pulled down to make room for it. In the twelfth century, the wood gave way to stone.
