You're standing at Kenilworth Castle, a ruin that packs almost five centuries of English building history into one site. Start with the colour of the walls. Nearly everything is built from local red sandstone, which gives the whole place that warm, rusty glow. Rising above it all is the old Norman great tower, built around 1120 by Geoffrey de Clinton, treasurer to King Henry the First. Its walls are five metres thick.
