You're standing on top of Mount Avala, south-east of Belgrade, in front of the Monument to the Unknown Hero. Start with the shape. It's a huge sarcophagus of black granite from Jablanica, set on a base of five steps. Those five steps stand for five centuries of Ottoman rule over Serbia. The whole thing is 14.5 metres high and 36 metres long, and the stairs leading up to it run for a full 93 metres.
