You're standing in Piazza del Campo, the great square at the heart of Siena. Locals simply call it Il Campo. Take a look around. The square is shaped like a scallop shell and slopes downhill, like the seating of a theatre. Down at the lowest point is the stage: the city hall, the Palazzo Pubblico, with its Torre del Mangia.
