You're standing at Vindolanda, a Roman fort just south of Hadrian's Wall. It's actually older than the Wall itself. Roman soldiers were stationed here from around the year 85 until about 370, guarding the Stanegate, the military road across the narrow neck of Britain. The name is probably Celtic, meaning something like 'white lawn'.
