You're standing at Woodside Ferry in Birkenhead, next to one of the strangest sights in England. This is U-534, a German submarine from the Second World War, sliced into pieces. Take a look at those cut faces. In 2008, engineers used a diamond wire cutter to divide the boat into five sections, and two of them were later joined back together. That kept transport affordable, and it means you can look into the hull without climbing inside. Each section weighed up to 240 tonnes and arrived here by floating crane.
