You're standing at the Normandy American Cemetery, on a bluff high above Omaha Beach. Down there, on June 6, 1944, American troops came ashore. Many of them now rest right here. Take a look across the field of white headstones. There are 9,389 of them, in white marble, set in perfectly straight rows. Most are Latin crosses, with Stars of David among them for Jewish servicemen. Just over three hundred carry no name. They simply say this comrade in arms is known but to God.
