You're standing at the Cristo de la Luz in Toledo. It doesn't look like much at first: a small, square building of brick and stone, about eight metres on each side. Yet this is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was built in the year 999 as a mosque, when Toledo was part of the Caliphate of Córdoba. It was one of ten mosques in town, and it was called Bab al-Mardum, after a city gate nearby. You're in the old district where wealthy Muslims once lived, right by the Puerta del Sol.
