You're standing in Olympia, in a green valley where two rivers meet, the Alfeios and the Kladeos. This is where the ancient Olympic Games were held every four years, by tradition starting in 776 BC. It was never really a town. It was a sanctuary of Zeus, built around a sacred grove called the Altis. Only priests and staff lived here year-round. Visitors to the Games simply camped out under the open sky.
