You're standing at Appleby Castle, in the little town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, perched above the River Eden. Start with that big square tower of grey stone. That's Caesar's Tower, the old keep. It's about twenty-four metres tall, has four storeys, and went up around 1170. Next to it stands a stately mansion house. Together with their outbuildings, they sit around a courtyard ringed by curtain walls.
