You're standing at the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain of Strasbourg, the MAMCS for short. It sits on the left bank of the river Ill, right at the edge of the old Petite France quarter. First, take a look at the building itself. It went up between 1995 and 1998, designed by the Parisian architect Adrien Fainsilber, who had already created the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris. Running through the middle is a glass-covered hall on a cathedral scale: 104 metres long and 22 metres high. The galleries open out on either side of it.
