You're standing in the middle of the Grande Île, the island that forms the historic heart of Strasbourg. On one side flows the river Ill, on the other the Canal du Faux-Rempart, a canalised arm of the same river. Together they wrap the old centre in water. Because of its shape, locals sometimes call it the 'ellipse insulaire'. It's not big: roughly a kilometre and a quarter long and three quarters of a kilometre wide. Easy to explore on foot.
