You're standing at the Gravensteen, the castle of the Counts of Flanders, right in the heart of Ghent. Start by looking at the water around the walls. The moat is fed by the river Lys, and since 2016 the castle has once again stood two-thirds surrounded by water. Long ago this was a high sand dune between branches of the Lys, ringed by marshland. A perfect spot to defend.
