You're standing at the Tunnel of Eupalinos, in the side of Mount Kastro on Samos. It might look like just an opening in the rock. But behind it lies one of the masterpieces of ancient engineering. In the sixth century BC, workers dug a passage more than a kilometre long straight through this mountain. The goal was to bring fresh water to the island's ancient capital, today's Pythagoreion.
