You're standing by the bay of Elounda, on the east of Crete. Have a look at the water right in front of you. There's a city down there. This is where Olous once stood, one of the most important harbours in this part of the island. At some point in ancient times, the whole place sank into the sea. The story goes that eruptions of the volcano on Santorini, about seventy-five kilometres to the north, had something to do with it.
