You're standing at Borthwick Castle, about nineteen kilometres south-east of Edinburgh. It's one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Scotland. Notice how it sits on a small hill with a stream wrapped around it. On three sides the ground drops away steeply. You'd struggle to find a better spot to defend.
