You're standing at Het Steen, on the Steenplein right beside the river Scheldt. This sturdy stone fortress is the oldest building in Antwerp. It went up between 1200 and 1225 as the gatehouse of a much larger castle. What you see today is less than five percent of that old stronghold. Inside its walls there were once houses, a court of justice and even a church.
