You're standing at the Wedderborg in Wedde, in the east of the province of Groningen, close to the German border. A borg is the local word for a small castle, and this one has a moat around it, right on the bank of the river Westerwoldse Aa. The cellar goes back to the fourteenth century, the wings and tower to the fifteenth and sixteenth. What you see today is much smaller than the medieval castle, which had corner towers, a prison tower and bastions.
