You're standing at Lovrijenac, the Fortress of St. Lawrence, just outside Dubrovnik's western city wall. Look up at the rock. The fort sits there, thirty-seven metres above the sea. People call it Dubrovnik's Gibraltar, and you can see why. From up there, you could watch both ways into the city: the one by sea and the one by land.
