You're standing at the Rector's Palace in Dubrovnik, known in Croatian as Knežev dvor. For centuries this was the political heart of the Republic of Ragusa, the old city-state centred on Dubrovnik. From the fourteenth century until 1808, the Rector of the Republic had his seat here. The Minor Council and the state administration worked here too. And that's not all. The building also held an armoury, a gunpowder store, a watch house and a prison. Governing and locking people up, all under one roof.
