You're standing at Blarney Castle, a medieval stronghold in the town of Blarney, in Cork. Look up at that tall stone tower. That's the keep, built in 1446 by the MacCarthys of Muskerry, a branch of the old Kings of Desmond. But people were building here long before that. Around 1200 there was probably a timber house on this spot, and around 1210 a stone fortress replaced it. When that was destroyed in 1446, Cormac Láidir MacCarthy, Lord of Muscry, rebuilt it.
