You're standing at the Befreiungshalle, the Hall of Liberation, high on the Michelsberg hill above the Bavarian town of Kelheim. Down below, the Altmühl flows into the Danube. Take a good look at this huge round building of pale Kelheim limestone. It isn't really a circle, it's a polygon with eighteen sides. On top of its eighteen pillars stand eighteen colossal statues by Johann Halbig. They represent German peoples who joined the fight, from Bavarians and Prussians to Saxons and Swabians. The hall is forty-five metres high and twenty-nine metres across.
